Diversity Day by Rolfi, translated by Spanish 2, period 4
Diversity day is a day that is celebrated at Dirigo High School on January 26th. It celebrates diversity, the different people, races, nationalities, religions, ect. that there are in the school, but despite these differences we are all equal, we are all humans.
The first person who spoke at the assembly in the school gym was the mayor of Lewiston, Mr. Jenkins. I thought the way he opened the day was very good, how he touched on different points about the theme. For a teenager they could be or appear boring, but he knew how to call our attention. He made the conversation fun and participatory by playing games, and we even learned something.
My first session was "Beyond Tolerance" with Mr. Abdula Ali and he talked about the Islamic religion and what his life was like, where he grew up and how the religion affected his life. In the conversation, I learned a lot about the religion, how it functions, in what they believe, the culture and the way they pray. It was a good speech and the presenter was good also.
My second and fifth period it was my turn to speak a little about what it is like growing up in Venezuela. My birth country. I spoke a little about important facts that same and later i explained and spoke about what reality is like, without any lies, growing there. I spoke about what my day is like, the good things and the bad thing and what they are and what there like. I liked to have talked about this because in this way people learn or get to know a little about Venezuela and furthermore I could observe the faces of trauma of students when I spoke of the bad of Venezuela and to see how different we are in regard to our worries, hopes, and fears. For example, for us a fear if we go home and not be able to save the house in the end I would have liked to talk a little about my country and my life.
In my last period I was in, I saw Young talk about South Korea and hoe it was growing up there, the education, the social life, the differences in similarities with the United States and I also compared with Venezuela. I liked having the chance of learning about this country from two students of the same, which made it more interesting and credible.
There was another assembly in which a man spoke from the country of Sudan in Africa. He spoke a little of how the country is how the people live there, the distinct problems that nation is suffering from and the culture. He preferred a presentation in which showed distinct photos relating with the theme. I learned a little of the country, of his culture and that no one is the only one in the world, that there are many countries and people with problems. I thought that the assembly was good in spite of the fact that I do not understand much but it gave the opportunity to the students to participate in a dance which was funny to watch.
